Twenty20 World Championship 2007

Sri Lanka vs New Zealand

Jayasuriya blasts Sri Lanka to victory

Sanath Jayasuriya smashed 61 to steer Sri Lanka to a seven-wicket win over New Zealand who had made 164-7 in their World Twenty20 match in Johannesburg. Jayasuriya tore into the Kiwis, adding 82 with Upul Tharanga (37) and 50 with Mahela Jayawardene (35 not out) before he holed out with the game nearly won.
Opener Upul Tharanga made 37 while skipper Mahela Jayawardene made an unbeaten 18-ball 35.

Earlier, the 23-year-old Ross Taylor spurred New Zealand to a competitive 164 scoring 62 off 43 balls, with three fours and three sixes. Taylor came to the crease after New Zealand, who chose to bat first, had lost two early wickets and he shared a 70-run stand for the third wicket with Peter Fulton (25).
Sri Lanka maintained their 100% record in the group stage and continued to look the strongest team so far in the competition. Both teams have already qualified for the Super Eights round from group C at the expense of Kenya and will not carry points earned in this match into the next round.

New Zealand meet India in their first Super Eights match at Johannesburg on Sunday, while Sri Lanka face Asian rivals Pakistan at the same venue on Monday.
