The 2009 ICC World Twenty20 is the World Championship for Cricket in the Twenty20 format. There are 12 teams competing in the Group Stages. The first two placed teams from each of the four groups (Group A to D) will move on to the Super Eights. Each team plays three games against teams they have not already played. (Teams divided into Group E and Group F). Fixtures are predetermined and have no connection to who finished first and second in the group. No points are carried forward from group stages. Top two teams in Groups E and F qualify for semi-finals.

Pakistan ICC World Twenty20 2009 Champions

Shahid Afridi's sensible yet electrifying batting, with a couple of boom-booms thrown in for good measure, helped Pakistan overtake Sri Lanka's modest score with 8 balls to go, and bag the Championship. With his outstanding bowling throughout the tournament, and great batting towards the final stages, Shahid Afridi has risen to iconic status that was reserved for the likes of Imran Khan in a nation troubled by conflicts for so long.
Afridi's unbeaten 54 and a wicket of the very last ball, earned him the Man-of-the-Match award. He hit two sixes and two fours, and the winning runs, after which he stood and saluted the thousands of elated Pakistani supporters in his usual trademark style. It was the second global one-day title for Pakistan after Imran Khan's side rallied in similar fashion to win the 1992 50-over World Cup. Pakistan lost the inaugural Twenty20 final in 2007 to India.


Sri Lanka had effectively lost the match in the first six powerplay overs, after they were down 32 for 4. A captain's innings from Kumar Sangakkara and a late charge by Angelo Mathews (partnership of 68 runs in 43 deliveries) boosted Sri Lanka to 138 for 6. Abdul Razzaq claimed a wicket in each of his first three overs, removing Jehan Mubarak for a duck, Sanath Jayasuriya for 17 and Mahela Jaywardene for one.

On Sunday, July 21st, the two best bowling sides in the second edition of the World Twenty20 - Pakistan, the mesmerizingly over-achieving underdogs and Sri Lanka, the remarkably professional and well oiled machine - meet in the finals at Lord's. While two Pakistanis - Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal - have picked up 12 wickets apiece in the tournament to top the bowling charts, Sri Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis (with an outstanding economy rate of less than 5 runs an over) and fast bowler Lasith Malingahas also have 12 wickets apiece. But their bowling strength is deeper, with Muralitharan and Angelo Mathews taking 13 wickets between them at less than a run a ball. For Pakistan, the surprise package has been Shahid Afridi, who picked up 10 wickets in the tournament so far, conceding just 5.37 runs per over.

Batting is one area that worries Sri Lanka. Other than Dilshan (with 317 runs at an average over 60), Jayasuriya (160 runs), Jayawardene (153 runs) and to an extent, Sangakkara (just 113 runs), no one else has contributed much with the bat. The one area where the Lankans do excel over Pakistan is their fielding.
The Pakistan batting averages just 138 as a team, with no one shining in particular, but everyone contributing in bits and pieces. Captain Younis Khan (172 runs) and Kamran Akmal (151 runs) are the leading batsmen.
With both sides preferring to bat first, the toss will be crucial. The last contest between the two finalists was in the Super Eights at Lord's when Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 19 runs. Sri Lanka made 150 for the loss of 7 wickets as Dilshan and Jayasuriya put on 81 for the first wicket in 9 overs, with the rest of the side adding just 69 more from the 11 overs that followed. Despite a 37 ball 50 from Younis Khan, Pakistan lost too many wickets to Malinga and Murali and ended up 19 runs short of the target.

Sri Lanka storms into World T20 final

Tillakaratne Dilshan's 96 not out, and a three-wicket opening over spell for one run by Angelo Matthews took Sri Lanka into an all-Asia final at the ICC World Twenty20 to be played on Sunday. Man-of-the-match Tillakaratne's unbeaten 96, the highest score of the event, came as his team-mates struggled for momentum. He batted through out the innings in Sri Lanka's 158 for five, and was involved in the opening wicket partnership of 73 with Jayasuriya, who looked strangely subdued while making 24 in 46 balls.
Angelo Mathews then stunned West Indies with three wickets in the opening over before the spinners strangled the middle order, leaving Chris Gayle, who played a captain's role, unbeaten on 63 as he carried his bat while no one else reached double figures.
The Sri Lankan opening bowler finished with three for 16 from four overs. Muttiah Muralitharan took 3-29 and Ajantha Mendis 2-9 as West Indies was all out in less than 18 overs for 101.

Boom Boom lifts Pakistan into World T20 final

Shahid Afridi shone with bat and ball at Trent Bridge as Pakistan dumped South Africa by seven runs to storm into the World Twenty20 final. Boom Boom smashed 51 from 34 balls and then grabbed 2-16 with his leg-spin as Pakistan successfully defended 149-4 to restrict the favoured Proteas to 142-5 before a sell-out crowd.
Afridi, coming on to bowl in the seventh over, struck twice in four deliveries when he bowled Herschelle Gibbs and AB de Villiers to make South Africa 50-3 in 8.3 overs. Veteran Jacques Kallis made a brave attempt to take the South Africans home, striking seven fours and a six in 64 from 54 balls, but the other batsmen faltered against the spot-on attack.

South Africa v Pakistan at Trent Bridge, Nottingham
South Africa is one of the only two teams in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 to reach the Semis without losing a single match (Sri Lanka is the other). The perennial favorites in any form of cricket, and big time chokers at crunch time, South Africa will have to overcome their nerves to go on to the semis when they meet a resurgent Pakistan team which is looking stronger and stronger with each match. AB de Villiers is currently South Africa's top scorer with 185 runs in five matches, and teammate Jacques Kallis is not far behind with 174 from four matches.
Seamer Roelof van der Merwe is the team's best bowler with 9-106 from 17 overs, while Wayne Parnell has 8-93 from the same number of overs.
Right-arm seamer Umar Gul is the main reason the Pakistanis have progressed so far in the tournament after a stuttering start. Gul, who was the highest wicket-taker in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa when Pakistan ended runners-up to India, again tops the list with 12 scalps in this tournament. Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal is joint second with Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga in the wicket-taker's list with 11 wickets, while leg-spinning allrounder Shahid Afridi has eight. Pakistan were routed by South Africa in a practice match ahead of the tournament at Trent Bridge, losing by 59 runs after being bowled out for 127 in reply to South Africa's 186-7.

Sri Lanka, the unbeaten, strongest, and best balanced team in the tournament, will face West Indies in the second semi-final at the Oval on Friday. Three of Lanka's big four batsmen have been in form, with the opening partnership of Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillekeratne Dilshan performing consistently well. Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene showed in the match against New Zealand that they have the class and composure to lead their side to victory on the big stage. Dilshan is the tournament's top runscorer.
While spinner Ajantha Mendis is an absolute terror, veteran spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has been successfully strangling sides in the middle overs. Mendis already has 10 victims in the tournament while sling-shot fast bowler Lasith Malinga lies joint second in the leading wicket-takers in the tournament with 11 and are expected to provide the main obstacle to West Indies' chances of progress. West Indies skipper Chris Gayle, after beating England in a do-or-die match went on to remark that some teams were now scared of his team. Dwayne Bravo, with 154 runs from 4 matches and eight wickets for 123 runs from 14 overs, has been the best all-rounder in the tournament so far. Lendl Simmons with 150 runs from 4 matches is also in terrific form.

South Africa Beat India To March Into Semi-Finals Unbeaten

AB de Villiers scored 63 in a low scoring match with seven fours in 51 balls, as South Africa made 130-5 and finished off India, which made 118-8 at Trent Bridge to complete the Super 8s unbeaten. South Africa, which had already qualified for the semifinals, returns to Trent Bridge on Thursday when it meets Pakistan in the first semifinal.
Dhoni blamed India's batting for the failure and said supporters had every right to be unhappy. India put on 48 for the first wicket, but collapsed once Gautam Gambhir fell in the seventh over for 21. Raina returned soon with three, and opener Rohit Sharma with a team-best 29 followed him. Dhoni was senselessly run out in the 13th for five, and Yusuf Pathan faced just two balls before he was caught by de Villiers off Roelof van der Merwe in the next over without scoring. Yuvraj and Harbhajan steadied India, and scored some quick runs, but Harbhajan fell in the 17th for 14 and Yuvraj was out six balls later for 25.

Sri Lanka keep clean slate, reach semis

Man of the Match Ajantha Mendis' three-wicket spell of 3-0-9-3 took the wind out of New Zealand’s run chase, as the Black Caps collapsed 48 runs behind the victory target of 159, earning Sri Lanka a place in the semi-final with their third straight victory in the Super Eights group stages. They topped Group F.
Kiwis, the pre-tournament favorites, only beat Scotland and Ireland and lost to semi-finalists South Africa and West Indies, to exit before the semis. Captian Vettori said a South Africa v Sri Lanka final at Lord's on Sunday looked to be on the cards.

Windies boot hosts England out of the Tournament and head to the Semis

In an innings shortened to 9 overs due to rain, West Indies were required to take 80 runs following the Duckworth-Lewis method. England, who batted first, scored 161/6 in 20 overs. Ravi Bopara's 55 runs and Kevin Pietersen's 31 off 19 balls were the highlights of the English innings. Dwayne Bravo took 2 wickets for West Indies giving away 30 runs in 4 overs.
The England innings was followed by a heavy downpour and rain delay. The West Indies team, chasing a target of 80 runs in 9 overs got off to a shaky start, losing Andre Fletcher in the first over for a duck. Chris Gayle, the backbone of the West Indian batting line-up took 15 runs from only 8 balls, but was bowled out by Sidebottom in the second over. Bravo steadied the innings with 18 runs, but the required run rate kept creeping up and West Indies were 45/5 in 5.2 overs. Needing 35 runs in 22 balls, with 5 wickets in hand, the West Indies innings were on shaky grounds and match which could easily go either way at this stage. Thankfully, for the Windies, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan came through for their team and both remained unbeaten with scores of 17 (off 10 balls) and 19 (off 9 balls) respectively. The Windies attained their target with 4 balls remaining.

2009 ICC World Twenty20 Match 22: WI vs ENG, Group E, June 15: England 161/6 in 20 overs (Bopara 55, Pietersen 31, Bravo 2-30 ) lost to West Indies 82/5 in 8.2 overs (Target D/L Method - 80 in 9 overs) (Sarwan 19, Chanderpaul 17, Bravo 18, Gayle 15) by 5 wickets

Pakistan pull off comfortable victory over Ireland to reach the Semi Finals

Pakistan beat Ireland by 39 runs to secure a berth in the Semi Finals of the ICC World twenty 20 Championship. The Pak team were dominant in all aspects of the game. Kamran Akmal, once again came through for Pakistan and was the top scorer with 57 runs. Shahzaib Hasan (23) and Shahid Afridi (24) also made notable contributions to Pakistan's total of 159/5. Kyle McCallan was the most successful bowler for Ireland taking 2 wickets at the cost of 26 runs.
In the batting line-up of the Irish, only three players were able to score double-digits. Opener William Porterfield (40 runs off 36 balls) tried to build a strong innings, but the Pakistan bowlers kept Ireland on their toes and took wickets at regular intervals. From 87/3 in 13 overs, Ireland only reached 111/9 in 18.3 overs. Saeed Ajmal was the one who wreaked most havoc on the Irish batsmen taking 4 wickets and conceding only 19 runs in 4 overs. Ireland were able to gather just 120/9 in the allotted 20 overs.
Kamran Akmal was named Player of the Match.

2009 ICC World Twenty20 Match 21: PAK vs IRE, Group F, June 15: Pakistan 159-5 (Akmal 57, Hasan 23, Afridi 24, McCallan 2-26 ) beat Ireland 120-9 (Porterfield 40, K O'Brien 26, Ajmal 4-19, Gul 2-19) by 39 runs

Defending Champions India succumb to England and bow out of the tournament ‎

India, the defending champions lost to England by 3 runs in the crucial match at Lord's. After winning the toss, India elected to field, but were unable to take early wickets. England lost the wicket of Luke Wright in the second over and were 3/1, but Ravi Bopara (37) and Kevin Pietersen (46) stabilised their innings and England managed to take 153/7 in the allotted 20 overs. Harbhajan Singh was the most succesful bowler for India who bowled 4 overs and took 3 wickets giving away only 30 runs. India lost Rohit Sharma (9) in the 2nd over and Suresh Raina (2) in the 4th over and their scoring pace slowed down after that. From 12/1 after 2 overs, the Indians were only able to get to 62/3 in 11 overs. Yuvraj Singh was a glimmer of hope for India, when he took 17 runs off only 9 balls, but lost his wicket to Foster who stumped him off a ball by Swann. Towards the end of the Indian innings, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (30*) and Yousuf Pathan (33*) tried to take India to their target of 154, but they fell short by just 3 runs in the nail-biting finish of this match.
Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni continued with his experimenting, even in the must win match, playing Ravindra Jadeja instead of the experienced Irfan Pathan, and promoting him to No 4 in the batting line-up instead of Yuvraj Singh when India needed quick runs.

Though India will not advance to the semi-finals, they still have one more match to play, on Tuesday, June 16th, against South Africa. Winning that match will not help India's chances in this champoinship in any way, but it will give the millions of Indian fans something to be proud of about their team's performance in this ICC Twenty 20 World Cup.

2009 ICC World Twenty20 Match 20: IND vs ENG, Group E, June 14: England 153-7 (Pietersen 46, Harbhajan 3-30, Jadeja 2-26) beat India 150-5 (Pathan 33*, Sidebottom 2-31, Swann 2-28) by three runs

Ireland give Srilanka a good fight, but ultimately lose by 9 runs‎

The Irish team who played against Sri Lanka today were a far cry from the team that lost by 83 runs to New Zealand earlier in the tournament. Dilshan, Sri Lanka's star batsman was out for a duck in the second ball of the match, caught by Niall O' Brien off a ball by Boyd Rankin. Sangakkara was out (c N O'Brien b Johnston) in the third over for only 3 runs. Alex Cusack took 4 wickets for Ireland in 3 overs, conceding only 18 runs. Jayasuriya (27) and Jayawardene (78) steadied the Sri Lankan innings and set the Ireland team a target of 145 runs in 20 overs. Porterfield and Niall O' Brien laid the foundation of the Irish innings taking 31 runs each. Sri Lanka failed to take any wickets till the 10th over when Porterfield was caught by Sangakkara off a ball by Muralitharan. Ireland's run rate declined steeply after Ajantha Mendis took down both the O'Brien brothers in the 14th over. Needing 18 runs from the last over, Ireland was able to get only 8 runs and their final score was 135/7.

With this defeat, Ireland are eliminated from progressing further in this World Twenty20 tournament. Sri Lanka will play against New Zealand on Tuesday, June 16th at trent Bridge and Ireland will face Pakistan tomorrow at Kennington Oval in their final match.

It is do or die for India and England who will take on each other in the ICC World Twenty20 match at Lord's on Sunday. Each team will have to win the match to have any chance of progressing to the semifinal, after losing their first matches of the super eight stage. India lost to West indies in the super eight stage, while England lost to South Africa
The last time India met England in a World Twenty20 was in South Africa in 2007, when India's master destroyer Yuvraj Singh had hit England's baby-faced fast bowler Broad for six sixes in one monumental over. Yuvraj finished that innings with 58 off 16 deliveries, as India made 219, chasing which, England lost by 18 runs.

Umar Gul stuns New Zealand with first ever Twenty20 5-wicket haul‎

A sensational five-wicket haul for just 6 runs in 3 overs by Umar Gul helped Pakistan defeat New Zealand by six wickets to keep their semi-finals hopes alive in the World Twenty20.
The Kiwis were all out for a paltry 99 in 18.3 overs, after they won the toss and decided to bat first at Oval. After being introduced in the 13th over, Gul wreaked havoc in his three-over spell and emerged the first bowler ever to claim five wickets in a T20 international.
Pakistan coasted home to finish on 100-4 with Shahzaib Hasan making 35 and Shahid Afridi 29 not out.

2009 ICC World Twenty20 Match 18: PAK vs NZL, Group F, June 13: New Zealand 99 in 18.3 overs (Gul 5-6, Razzaq 2-17) lost to Pakistan 100/4 in 13.1 overs (Shahzaib Hasan 35, Shahid Afridi * 29) by 6 wickets (with 41 balls remaining)

South Africa maintains unbeaten record as Windies go down

South Africa, batting first, were on course for a huge total as all-rounder Jacques Kallis (45) put on an opening 54-run partnership with Smith (31) and a second wicket 51-run partnership with Herschelle Gibbs (55). But they lost 5 quick wickets for just 34 runs in 25 balls on a typically good batting pitch, accompanied by a fast outfield, to finish 183/7.
West Indies, looking for the second consecutive win in consecutive matches, were given hope as Lendl Simmons hit 77 off just 50 balls with a six and 12 fours. But the South African teenager and left-arm fast bowler, Wayne Parnell, took 4-13, including the wickets of openers Andre Fletcher and Chris Gayle in four balls, to put his side firmly on the front foot. In the end, West Indies could manage only 163, falling short by 20 runs.

2009 ICC World Twenty20 Match 17: SAF vs WIN, Group E, June 13: South Africa 183/7 (Gibbs 55, Kallis 45) beat West Indies 163/9 (Simmons 77, Parnell 4-13) by 20 runs

Bravo magic sinks defending champions

West Indies beat India by seven wickets in a thrilling run chase at the Twenty20 World Cup at Lord's on Friday. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, India lost quick wickets at the top with Rohit Sharma the first to go for 5, caught by Simmons off Edwards in the second over. Suresh Raina was next for 5, giving a catch behind to Denesh Ramdin off Edwards. Simmons then brilliantly caught opener Gautam Gambhir, taking a superb catch running back as Gambhir miscued a Bravo delivery. Dhoni made a painful 11 before he was out caught on the boundary by Andre Fletcher off Bravo as he tried to force a sixer.
Yuvraj Singh (67) and Yusuf Pathan (31) gave something to the packed Indian crowd to cheer on, and they looked they were taking the match away from the West Indians, but an ill-timed shot by Yuvraj again gave the momentum back to the Caribbeans. Harbhajan hit three fours off the last three balls to give India a defendable target of 153-7.
India celebrated with early wicket of Fletcher for nought, and later when dangerman Gayle was out on 22, but Simmons and Bravo put on 50 from 35 balls, and shifted the momentum decisively in West Indies' favour. Dwayne Bravo who had taken four wickets to keep India down earlier, went on to score a 66 not out and ended up with the Man of the Match award.

Sri Lanka defend modest total to beat Pakistan‎

Sri Lanka survived a mid-innings slump and a threatening 66-run partnership between Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq to ease to a 19-run win in their first game of the Super Eights at Lord's. Sanath Jayasuriya (26) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (46) put on 81 for the first wicket but then lost 6 wickets for 69 runs to Shahid Afridi (2 for 23) and Saeed Ajmal (2 for 26) as they slumped to 150-7.
Lasith Malinga (3 for 17) and Muttiah Muralitharan (2 for 28) were able to restrict Pakistan to 131-9 with Younus Khan positng 50.

June 12 Preview: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, India vs West Indies at the Lord's

Pakistan take on Sri Lanka in a Group F match at Lord's on Friday at 18:00 IST which is an important match for both teams. Pakistan has so far shown they can play like winners or losers, depending on the mood of the team. Shahid Afridi's bowling (with his 4-11 against the Dutch ) has picked up, but his batting style has been ridiculed by everyone since the tournament started. Sri Lanka on the other hand are fresh from two morale boosting victories over Australia and West Indies. Batsman Dilshan and veteran all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya have both already recorded big scores with the bat. India meet Windies in the second match, scheduled to start at 22:00 IST in a Group E match. Belonging to the toughest group, a win or loss can mean moving to the semis or going home. T20 World Champions India barely had to break sweat progressing from their group with comfortable wins over Bangladesh and Ireland. West Indies on the other hand are inconsistent, depending too much on Captain Chris Gayle's batting. Electing to field first, the New Zealand bowlers were successful in limiting South Africa to a low score of only 128/7. Ian Butler (4-0-13-2) and Nathan McCullum (4-0-18-1) deserve notable mention in this performance by New Zealand. Graeme Smith(33) and Jean-Paul Duminy(29) were the high-scorers for South Africa. However, the New Zealand batsmen were unable to convert the good performance by their bowlers into a victory. Brendan McCullum gave his team a solid start by scoring 57 runs off 53 balls. But the New Zealand innings lacked momentum and from 2-26in 3 overs, they reached only 3-82 in 14 overs. They needed 2 runs from the last ball to win, but instead lost the wicket of Oram in a run out. New Zealnd were able to take only 127/5 in 20 overs. Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds is being sent home from the Twenty20 World Cup in England for another off-field incident relating to alcohol. Cricket's bad boy broke team rules by having late night drinking sessions and failing to inform teammates of his whereabouts during Australia's Twenty20 World Cup preparations.
Symonds will arrive back in Brisbane with his international career effectively over and no guarantee he will return to the cricket field.
Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said "In the last 24-48 hours he has broken a number of team rules. In the context of commitments Andrew has made to his teammates and to Cricket Australia in the last six months, it's the last straw. Unfortunately, it's a constant balancing act and it's just tipped too far today."Victoria allrounder Cameron White is believed to be on standby to replace Symonds, subject to ICC approval.

In the final warm-up game, India beat Pakistan in an emphatic fashion in front of a packed house at the Oval. Pakistan started strongly, with the young Ahmed Shehzad scoring 25 off 19 balls with 5 fours, but Ishant Sharma's first over, a 2 wicket maiden, changed the course of the game.
India, riding on the first wicket partnership of 140 between Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir in 16 overs, took the match away from a wayward Pakistan attack.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Mahmudullah top scored for the Tigers with 43 and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan chipped in with 35 as they posted a useful 146 for six in twenty overs.

Andrew Flintoff will not be part of the England squad for World Twenty20 due to injury

All-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who is recovering from knee surgery will not be playing for England in the World Twenty20 2009 tournament.
Flintoff suffered a meniscus tear to his right knee while playing in the Indian Premier League, where he was the most expensive player in the player auction, at a whopping $1.55 million.
He will be replaced by Adil Rashid for the ICC World Twenty20. However, Andrew Flintoff hopes to be fully recovered by July for the Ashes series against Australia.

It was announced today that the ICC global broadcast partner ESPN Star Sports (ESS) will telecast the games of the ICC World Twenty20 to 218 countries around the world.
All men's matches will be broadcast live, and the semifinals and finals of the women's world cup will also be featured. Symonds, Lee, Shane Watson in Australia World Twenty20 squad

Australia on Tuesday named injured pacer Brett Lee, temperamental all-rounder Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson in its 15-member squad for next month's ICC World Twenty20.
Symonds' inclusion is seen as a sign of his acceptance into the team after disciplinary incidents involving drinking and refusing to attend a team meeting led to his suspension last summer. Lee was a particularly difficult proposition for the selectors because they have not seen him bowl a ball since breaking down with a broken foot during the Boxing Day Test.
Ricky Ponting will lead the side with Michael Clarke named vice-captain.

Pakistan on Monday included controversial paceman Shoaib Akhtar in their 15-man squad for next month's Twenty20 World Cup in England. The 33-year-old injury-prone Shoaib took part in four of the five one-day internationals which ended on Sunday in Abu Dhabi with Pakistan's 3-2 defeat against Australia, with the fast bowler taking six wickets.
Aamer, a tall left-armer, is one of the two rookies included in the England-bound squad. The selectors have sprung a major surprise by including Shahzaib Hasan, a 19-year-old Karachi opener in the touring party.
Lahore youngster Ahmed Shahzad is also in after a string of useful contributions in the series against Australia.

Left-arm medium pace bowler RP Singh has made his way into the 15-member Indian team for the next month's ICC World Twenty20 to be played in England. Rudra Pratap Singh, who was the highest Indian wicket-taker in the victorious squad of the 2007 World Twenty20 Championship, was out of the India team for nearly seven months.
Ravindra Jadeja, will join fellow Gujarat players, Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan.
Orissa born Deccan Chargers left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, also found place in the 15 member squad. He captured 10 wickets from six matches and has made tremendous impact with his leftarm spin in the ongoing IPL matches. Chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth & Co. made six changes in the 2007 squad. The ones who have missed out are Ajit Agarkar, Sreesanth, Joginder Sharma, Piyush Chawla, Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik.
India, who won the inaugural World T20 in South Africa in 2007, will be led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni with Virender Sehwag as his deputy.

Oram named in New Zealand cricket team for Twenty20 World Cup

New Zealand's cricket selectors took a gamble Tuesday by including injury-plagued all-rounder Jacob Oram in a 15-man squad for the Twenty20 World Cup.
Oram took no part in New Zealand's three-Test series against India because of a variety of injuries but had been chosen in the hope he would be fit, selector Glenn Turner said. Turner said New Zealand had to choose a versatile squad for the June tournament because of uncertainty about weather conditions in England in June.
All-rounder Scott Styris, who last played for New Zealand in December against the West Indies, has been recalled while all-rounder Grant Elliott and medium paceman Tim Southee have been omitted.
New Zealand will travel to England in mid-May and will play warmup matches against India on June 1 and Australia on June 2. The tournament begins June 5, with New Zealand in a group with Scotland and South Africa.

Pakistan Cricket Board revises World Twenty20 probables

The Pakistan Cricket Board revised the list of 30 probables for World Twenty20 on Tuesday only a day after naming three suspended players from the unauthorized Indian Cricket League.
All-rounder Abdul Razzaq, batsman Imran Nazir and fast bowler Rana Naveed - suspended from international duty by the PCB because of their participation in the ICL - were initially named in the list of 30 probables.
However, the Pakistan board has now replaced them with wicketkeeper Zulfiqar Jan, off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and batsman Mohammad Hafeez in the list sent to the International Cricket Council on Tuesday.
All players competing in the ICL have been suspended by their respective cricket boards and are therefore unable to represent their countries in international matches. The future of ICL players will come up for discussion when the ICC's executive board meets in Dubai later this month. The provisional 30-man squad will be cut to 15 when the final squad is named next month.

Strauss out of World T20 squad

England Test and one-day international captain Andrew Strauss has been left out of the 30-man squad for the World Twenty20 to be held on these shores later this year.
Strauss has been omitted by the selectors after talks between himself and England and Wales Cricket Board chief Geoff Miller, where it was decided that his slower style would not suit the shorter form of the game. Several uncapped county stars - including highly-rated Twenty20 players Graham Napier of Essex and Joe Denly of Kent and former Irish one-day player Eoin Morgan of Middlesex - have been picked.
Young Yorkshire spinner Adil Rashid is also included, despite a lack of senior international experience in what is a squad with a more adventurous look than previous Twenty20 announcements.

India name 30 probables for World Twenty20

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finalised a 30-man squad for the ICC World Cup Twenty20 event which will be held in England later this year. S Sreesanth, Joginder Sharma, Piyush Chawla and Ajit Agarkar were the prominent names which did not figure in the list, although they were part of the team that won the Cup in 2007. The final squad of 15-16 players will be announced just before the tournament.
Sharma, Agarkar and Chawla were left out because they failed to impress the selectors during the domestic season; Sreesanth is nursing an ankle injury. Meanwhile, batsman Robin Uthappa has secured a place in the probable squad on the basis of his performance on the domestic front. He has been struggling to get back on the national squad since the last eight months.
