The West Indies, restricted to 137/6 after electing to bat, hit back to defeat Sri Lanka by 36 runs on Sunday. It was the Caribbeans' first major global title after a gap of 33 years having won the ODI World Cup back in 1979.Marlon Samuels smashed a heroic 78 off 56 balls to steer West Indies to 137 for six after only 32 runs came off the first 10 overs. The first run off the bat came off the 17th legal delivery. The hosts were all out for 101 in 18.4 overs. Reported Earlier: Darren Sammy won the toss and West Indies will bat first in the Finals against a Sri Lakan team that is desperate to win their first major tournament since the country surprised the cricketing world by claiming the World Cup 16 years ago. The Sri Lankan batting will be up-against West Indian pacers Fidel Edwards and Ravi Rampaul.

Sri Lanka defeated the West Indies by nine wickets in the Super Eights, the same margin as in a practice game before the tournament. Meanwhile the highest total of 205/4 in this edition of the WT20 Cup was posted by West Indies when they beat the Aussies by 74 runs in the Semi Finals, their biggest T20 victory. Jayawardene, with 210 runs, is the fourth highest run-maker in the tournament behind Australian Shane Watson (249), Gayle (219) and Brendon McCullum of New Zealand (212), while unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis shares the top spot among bowlers with Shane Watson at 11 wickets apiece, followed by sling-arm fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who has eight scalps.
